Funding your Business venture

Most people thinking of starting a business say “if only I could get x thousands of pounds of investment I could make this business work”.  You've probably seen them on Dragons Den!

In reality, funding a pre-start business is very difficult!  Investors like to minimise the risk of the money they are investing and, by definition, pre-start is the riskiest time of all.  Business Angels are usually more attracted by ideas that have in some way already been proven.

For this reason, most businesses get going by using a combination of own savings and borrowings from friends and family or even credit cards or credit unions.

There are some other funding sources available but they will have varying conditions for participation. Public funding sources are usually competitive or severely restricted to particular sectors or geographical areas. Private sector funds are usually only available when you seek more than £250k.
